UNESCO Values-Based Teaching Conference, Paris

Staff and students (past and present) attended a workshop on values in Sport, organised by the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organistaion (UNESCO) at their Headquarters in Paris, France.

The event brought together leaders from the International Olympic Committee, International Paralympic Committee, World Anti-Doping Association and International Fair Play Committee to work alongside various representatives and teachers already using sport and physical education to teach values to children.

Dr Gary Stidder, Graham Spacey, Annie Murray and Chloe Braybrook met with representatives from around the world to showcase the work of F4P International.

Undergraduate Physical Education teacher trainee Chloe Braybrook and Annie Murray, teacher at Bishop Bell CE School in Eastbourne, were invited to speak to delegates about how values-based teaching can be integrated into formal physical education lessons in schools.

Gary Stidder and Graham Spacey outlined the philosophy, values and aims of the programme and contributed to discussions on pedagogy, curriculum and methodology.  They met with former graduates Jannine Thompson, UNESCO consultant and Prof. Dr Margaret Talbot, President of ICCSPE.

Principal lecturer and co-founder of F4P International, Dr Gary Stidder, said:

“This was fantastic opportunity to share our work to an international audience.  It is a tried and tested model rooted in pedagogy that has the holistic development of the child at its heart.  Such a forum provided us with the chance to engage with key stakeholders and policy makers and highlight ways in which teacher and coach education can make an impact on personal, social, moral, cultural and spiritual development through sport and specifically through physical education.”
